Hitting is a very universal technique. To hit a baseball or softball, depending on the speed or the pitcher and what kind of junk he/she throws, the batter may be up or back in the batter's box. Every batter has their own style of hitting, practice swings, a way of taking their signals, a special stance in the batter's box, etc. If the pitcher is throwing straight fast balls but they have more speed than other pitchers then simply take a step back in the batter's box and start your swing earlier. If the pitcher is not that fast and throwing a lot of junk pitches then the batter should be up and in on the plate so that they will be able to catch the center of the ball before it breaks whichever way the ball is suppose to go. Even if the pitcher has no junk pitches but is slower you still want to stay up in the box because the ball will only travel so far until it gives out and falls. Sometimes umpires will call some of those balls strikes.
